About

Perspective in life, for the most part, changes everything. We gain perspective in a multitude of ways. Sometimes this perspective comes because life changes indefinitely for us. Sometimes it comes due to a close call, where life could have been altered forever, but instead remained the same (with some added perspective). For me, I have gained a lot of perspective when it comes to my oral hygiene. As a youngster, I never took care of my teeth. And because I never took care of my teeth, I had the absolute worst time at the dentist office because of all the work that needed to be done on my teeth.

Some people have had a tooth or two pulled from their mouths. Usually one or two pulled teeth isn’t enough for someone to change their ways regarding their dental hygiene. Me? I had to have 8 teeth pulled as a kid because of how much deterioration there was. The reason these teeth had to be pulled was because of the overall health of my gums. Luckily, these were baby teeth and were going to fall out eventually. This is the perspective I gained. I had a second chance at taking care of my teeth once my permanent teeth came in.

When we look at second chances in life, they can either be a blessing or a curse. The blessings come when there is a change in behavior or actions that are polar opposite of the behaviors or actions prior to the second chance. These behaviors and actions are so different that they won’t lead you down the path that you were on to begin with. The curse of second chances comes when these chances enable people to continue making the same exact mistakes. It gives them a license to continue the behavior they previously had.

My second chance with permanent teeth was a blessing because of how serious I got about taking care of them. My teeth and overall gum health have stayed healthy since my permanent teeth came in. I currently have no cavities, no fillings, no onset of periodontal disease. I brush twice per day, I floss twice per day, and I see my dental hygienist for a regular full mouth cleaning twice per year. All of these habits have come from my second chance at dental health, and I wouldn’t change it for anything. My teeth are a big part of my overall health.
